Ann Esch
2025 Bronc Day Grand Marshal

In 1914 Ann’s great grandfather, Theron Houghton, from Arkansas City, Kansas, built 2 summer cabins for his family in “The Gem of the Rockies”, Green Mountain Falls.
Theron’s daughter, Maude (Houghton) Sills, Ann’s grandmother, was related to the Newman family through her late mother, Helen Josephine (Newman) Houghton.
The Newman cousins were prosperous Kansas merchants and already owned “Breezy Point” and “Newman House” and entertained visitors from the hot plains of Kansas, including their cousins.
Grandfather Houghton was not wealthy but knew how to build, so “Jack o’Lantern” and “Grumble Knot” (smaller where the boys slept that had an outhouse) were built on a tiny parcel and have been enjoyed now by many children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins and other friends for over 100 years!!
Ann was a summer visitor beginning in 1937, two years old for the first Bronc Day, enjoying 3 glorious months every summer. She would ride her favorite horse, Chico, at the Brockhurst Stable for 25 cents an hour and got to be a “guide” when she ran out of money! She was 12 in 1949 when the last Midland train came through!
Ann has been dedicated to and deeply involved in the local government for decades and carries forward the history and essence of GMF, keeping it alive for those who don’t know/remember.
Ann is honored to help represent the “pioneers” and many older folks, by participating as Grand Marshal in the Bronc Day Parade this summer.
She is thankful for this wonderful opportunity!
