I grew up knowing my mother was famous for her cakes. Her fantastic towers of flavor and decorative art are captured on 8mm film, Polaroid, and my earliest memories. It was always The Cake taking center-stage at her elaborate dinner parties. Even growing up with this celebration of cake, I often requested lemon cherry pie for my birthday celebration. My grandmother always baked on Fridays. All kinds of pies and bread too. I still use many of her recipes. This one is "modernized" with the addition of caramel sauce, because who doesn't love a caramel apple !!
